At 8,163 meters (26,781 feet) above sea level, Manaslu is the world's eighth tallest peak. It is located in Nepal's west-central region, in the Mansiri Himal, around 60 kilometers (40 miles) east of Annapurna. The word “Manaslu” is derived from the Sanskrit term “Manasa” meaning “intellect” or “soul”. In other words, Manaslu is the “mountain of the spirit”. Its peak rises high above the surrounding landscapes and can be seen from afar. The popular Manaslu trek takes you around the peak of Manaslu, crossing Larkya La pass and leading down to the Annapurna region. The Manaslu Circuit is relatively “new” compared to other treks in Nepal, because the Nepalese government opened this area for trekking only in 1991. The trail along the Budhi Gandaki River is actually an ancient salt-trading route. Along the way, then peaks over 6,500 meters (21,325 feet) are visible, some at over 7,000 meters (22,966 ft). Highlights of this trek include breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, glacier lakes, some of the world's most beautiful plants, rare animal species and rich cultural heritage sites.
Trip overview
Manaslu is one of the most majestic 8,000-meter mountains in Nepal, surrounded by the Annapurnas (west) and Ganesh Himal (east). Without a doubt, the Manaslu Circuit is for those who love adventure, as it is more remote than the Annapurna Circuit. Away from the hustle and bustle of our everyday world, the Manaslu trek lets you experience pure wilderness, alpine woodlands and the amazing scenery of Himalayan peaks. Amongst them are Nagdi Chuli, Himal Chuli and, of course, Mt. Manaslu (8156m). Your trek starts along the Budhi Gandaki river with its turquoise streams and beautiful waterfalls. During the first days, you will cross countless suspension bridges, some of which are very high and long, so enjoy the thrill! Nature is simply stunning in this area. Discover rhododendron and other colorful flowers, juniper and even medical herbs. The animal world is just as exciting: You might see Himalayan thar, musk deer, plenty of birds and with a lot of luck, a snow leopard, who belongs to endangered wildlife species. You will also learn about local life and traditions in the mountain villages.
Tipping
Tipping is accepted in Nepali culture to confirm you are happy with the service, and it is actually expected for porters and guides. The amount is at the discretion of the traveler and should represent the level of service you received. We recommend tipping at the end of the trip.

What to pack for Manaslu Circuit?
Up in the mountains, the right gear is critical. Having the proper equipment makes the difference between a great time and a stressful experience. From warm clothes to perfectly fitting hiking boots and proper socks, poles and gloves… Make sure you have all you need and don’t compromise. On a trek, every detail matters. Don’t let a heavy bag or bad quality shoes spoil your adventure. At the same time, don’t carry too much: You don’t need climbing equipment for the Manaslu Circuit. Below is a basic packing list for any Nepalese trek, including Manaslu Circuit trek: Travel Duffel Bag or backpack, daypack with rain cover, hiking boots, extra pair of shoes or sandals, trekking socks, poles, inner Socks, baselayer thermal, T-shirts, fleece jacket, light thermal tops, a waterproof jacket, women's sports bra, trekking shorts and pants, waterproof pants, warm gloves and hat, scarf, water purifier, medical kit, power bank, batteries.
How can I get in shape for the Manaslu Circuit Trek in Nepal?
Cardio training and leg/core strengthening exercise are essential. However, it is difficult to prepare for high altitude if you live in a rather flat area. Staircases and hills are helpful for training. Don’t worry though: You don’t need to be 100 percent prepared for high altitude. You will be trekking and not running, so you have time to take it slowly. It is actually very important to find your own pace, acclimatize and take it easy to prevent altitude sickness. The fitter you are, though, the more you can enjoy your adventure.
What about food and drinks?
On the menu, you will find traditional as well as international dishes. The choice will diminish as you reach higher altitudes, but you will never be left hungry. We recommend to drink a lot of tea or hot water. This will help keep your body warm and hydrated. The teahouses may offer non-vegetarian options, but we don't recommend them because the meat may have been transported and stored for a long time. On a high-altitude trek, you should avoid caffeinated beverages, alcohol and dairy food. Black tea and lemon ginger honey tea are common hot drinks on the Manaslu Circuit Trek. Prices range from 50 to 450 per cup. Thermal flasks with hot water are always available, but it is better to ask for the price before you help yourself (which can greatly vary). At higher elevations, there are not so many snack options, so buy your snacks in Kathmandu or Soti Khola (dried fruits, almonds or chocolate bars).
Is the Manaslu Circuit difficult?
The Manaslu Circuit is a moderate to difficult trek which requires strength and stamina. If you are fit, healthy and prepare ahead of time, you can do it. From a technical point of view, you don’t need climbing skills. However, the altitude, the long daily walks and cold temperatures in high altitudes should not be taken lightly. Remember, you will be in a very remote area without phone signal for a while.
