Lobuche Peak consists of two distinct peaks that are frequently mixed up: Lobuche East Peak and Lobuche West Peak. For climbing adventures, Lobuche East is more popular (comparable to Island Peak), while Lobuche West is classified as category A climbing peak. In the past, Himalayan herders stayed in the Lobuche area during summer. Today, climbers from all over the world dream of reaching Lobuche East while discovering the natural beauty and vast cultural heritage the region has to offer.

Popularity

The Himalayas in Nepal are famous for the highest and most amazing mountains in the world. Nepal is one of the most popular destinations amongst trekkers and mountaineers. Lobuche Peak, at a height of 6119 meters, is a magnificent peak offering breathtaking views of the mountains in the Everest region. Lobuche Peak (Lobuche East) is one of Nepal's most popular climbing destinations, but at the same time, it is the most difficult “trekking peak” in Nepal's Everest region. Climbing to the summit of Lobuche is not a walk in the park. It introduces you to high-altitude mountaineering, so come prepared and trained with good climbing, crampon, ice ax and rope expertise. Lobuche Peak can be reached via the classic Everest Base Camp trek.

Climbing experience is highly recommended, as you may need to use mountaineering equipment such as a rope or an ice ax. On summit day, you will be on your feet for 8-10 hours. But all the struggles will be forgotten once you reach the top and enjoy breathtaking views of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Makalu, Everest, Nuptse, Cho Oyu, Cholatse and other giant peaks.

Climbing Lobuche East should be done between April and May or October and November. Those seasons offer ideal trekking and climbing conditions, because the risk of rain is low, the weather is stable and the temperatures are relatively mild. Insurance: Travel insurance and emergency evacuation insurance covering the costs of high altitude evacuations if necessary, is required. It is also a good idea to purchase cancellation insurance in case your vacation is canceled due to circumstances beyond your control.

Experience and fitness: Physical activities such as jogging, swimming, and sports, paired with climbs to lower peaks using the equipment you will be using on your journey, are recommended for your safety and success before the trek. If possible, train your technical rock and mountaineering skills, for example using jammers, ascenders, crampons and tying rope-climbing knots. To find the perfect high quality gear for you, we recommend to get expert advice and buy it in your home country. If you are in Nepal already, we can assist you in renting/buying gear in a local store. In general we recommend to get all your equipment in your home country to make sure you have the quality you need.

Food:

It is recommended to consume more meals at high altitudes, even if you are not hungry. Carbs are important and give you the energy you need. Take some snacks with you, such as chocolate bars and dry meals. Electrolytes, proteins and magnesium are helpful too.

Accommodation:

In Kathmandu, you will be staying in a 3-star hotel, while on the trek, accommodation is in lodges, guest houses and tents at Base Camp. Rooms in hotels and tea houses are twin share. The camping is basic, but a truly amazing experience in the heart of nature.

How can I obtain a visa for Nepal? What are the costs and documentation required?

A Nepal visa can be obtained with two different methods. One option is to apply for a visa at a Nepalese embassy in your own country. You can also obtain a Nepalese tourist visa through an immigration department stationed at the Kathmandu airport's international arrival. The cost of a Nepalese visa varies depending on how long you intend to stay in Nepal. For instance, if you wish to stay for two weeks, you need to budget roughly USD 30. Similarly, it costs 50 USD for one month (4 weeks) and 125 USD for three months (90 days). If you want to renew your visa before it expires, you will have to pay an additional charge. A visa extension of fewer than 15 days is not possible, and the charge for 15 days is USD 45. If you want to stay above the 15-day limit, you must now pay USD 3 each day until your departure date.

What is the risk of altitude sickness while on the expedition?

Because you'll be ascending the 6,119m high summit, the risk of altitude sickness is there. In fact, everyone who reaches a high altitude is susceptible to altitude sickness. If no or little measures are taken, altitude sickness can become life threatening. Please talk to your guide if you feel unwell. He is an expert in that matter and can support you immediately.
