Trip overview
Poonhill with Annapurna base camp trek takes you to 2 of Nepal's most popular viewpoints in the Himalayas. Poon Hill is “just” a hill, whereas Annapurna Base Camp is located at higher altitudes, surrounded by the peaks of the Annapurna Massif. This trek starts in Nayapul after a 2-hour bus or taxi ride from Pokhara. On your way to Annapurna Base Camp via Poon Hill, you will pass villages like Tatopani, Ghorepani, Chomrong and Tadapani where you have the chance to get to know the local people and culture. The majority of the Poon Hill-ABC trek takes you through the Annapurna protection area. This region is home to Snow leopards, deer, wild goats and rich vegetation. Along your way, you will take breaks in tea houses in different mountain villages like Sinuwa, Bambo, Dobhan, Himalaya, Deurali before you reach Machhapuchre Base Camp (3,700m) and finally Annapurna Base Camp. Enjoy a wonderful trekking experience in Himalayan nature as you follow the Modi Khola river bank and pass through a narrow gap between the two massive mountains Machhapuchre/Fishtail and Hunchuli.
Poon Hill
The Poon Hill trek is the shortest and “easiest” trek in the area. Nonetheless, it still requires endurance, because you need to walk 5-6 hours per day. The Poon Hill Trek is a good option to start your mountain adventures in the Himalayas. Located 3,210 meters above sea level and technically not challenging, Poon Hill is suitable for beginners and trekkers of all ages. The spectacular Annapurna views, the traditional lifestyle, picturesque villages, amazing sunrises, lush forests and diverse flora and fauna are the highlights of this adventure.

They are up to date about the weather conditions and will make wise decisions if it is necessary. Our guides also know exactly how to react in case of sickness or injury. Local medicine or just a “simple” garlic soup can work miracles sometimes, so have confidence. Sometimes the remedies that are not common in the Western world are working amazingly well in the mountains. Having said that, from a technical point of view, this trek is not very dangerous. The biggest challenges are the altitude and colder temperatures or snow the higher you reach.
What should I pack for the Poon Hill and Annapurna Base Camp trek?
When you are in the mountains, the right gear is essential. Having the proper equipment makes the difference between an amazing trek and a stressful experience. From functional clothes to perfectly fitting hiking boots, gloves and poles… Make sure you have all your gear ready and don’t compromise. Up in the mountains, the tiniest mistake can have rather big consequences. Don’t let a heavy bag or too small shoes spoil your adventure. The right equipment will give you the right confidence to reach your goal in a safe way.
Do I need to train for this trek?
Training is important to prepare your body and mind. Combine physical and mental fitness with enthusiasm, and you are all set for success. If you are new to trekking, it is best to start training months or even a year in advance. After you have built some stamina, start hiking with a backpack and try to fit in your schedule a longer hike every week. Cardio training and strength exercises are important. Make sure your knees are in good shape, and increase the intensity of your exercises slowly but steadily. Don’t do too much in a short period of time, because this increases the risk for injuries.
How is the accommodation like on Poon Hill / ABC trek?
In Pokhara, you will stay in a “real” hotel with comfortable beds and a hot shower. During the trek, you will stay in lodges, or so called tea houses. They offer a basic level of comfort, but keep in mind that comfort is rather relative. The tea houses are a place to recharge with home-cooked meals, a fire place and simple beds with a simple matrass. The tea houses are run by local families who have opened their homes to trekkers. They can’t offer a luxury resort, but a friendly place with local hosts who will welcome you with open arms.
