The Annapurna Circuit is a trip around Nepal's famous mountain ranges. Depending on where motorized transport is used and where the trip ends, the total length of the journey can be between 160 and 230 kilometers (100–145 mi). On this journey, you will trek around the Annapurna Massif and cross two separate river valleys. The highest point of the Annapurna Circuit is Thorong La pass (5416m/17769 ft) on the Tibetan plateau's edge. Most trekkers take the route counterclockwise, because the daily ascent is slower and crossing the high Thorong La pass is safer from that side.
The classic Annapurna Circuit around the Annapurna massif is also known as the "Around Annapurna trek". In Sanskrit, “anna” means “grains” and “purna” means “numerous”. This trek is the best choice if you want to see a little bit of everything Nepal has to offer. Keep in mind though: It is not an easy trek. The high altitude and sometimes unpredictable weather can make crossing Thorong La Pass a challenge. A good preparation and caution is key to success. The Annapurna Circuit in its original form has been voted the best long-distance trek in the world because it covers all climate zones from the tropics at 600 meters altitude to the arctic at 5416 meters altitude at Thorong La pass. Besides that, you will discover cultural diversity from Hindu villages in the lower areas to Tibetan culture in Manang Valley and lower Mustang. Meanwhile, the trail has been shortened and the villages have changed due to the construction of a road. A big part of the Beisahar-Manang road runs through the trail. With new roads being built, mountain biking is becoming more popular, especially in Mustang.

Trip Overview

The region around Annapurna is known for its diverse flora and fauna, which includes some endangered species. The cascading streams and lush alpine forests surround you with a peaceful setting. On your way, you will pass numerous waterfalls, gorges and valleys, through all climatic zones from tropical to arctic. The Annapurna Circuit is not only about nature and mountains, but also about cultural diversity. Some of the most famous ethnic groups in the Annapurna region are the Gurung and Magar, who are known for their unique culture and traditions. Discover warm hospitality, admire majestic peaks and recharge while walking through the Himalayas, accompanied by colorful prayer flags all along the way.

Is the Annapurna Circuit suitable for everyone?

The biggest challenges on this trek is the duration of the daily walks and the crossing of Thorong La pass. High altitude and cold temperatures can take their toll on the body and require a good preparation. In other words, you need to be fit and healthy and wear the right clothes. Having said that, you don’t need to be a mountaineer for this trek, because there is no climbing involved and the trail difficulty is rather moderate. If you are able to trek for many hours a day during almost 2 weeks, this trek is for you. Look forward to a great combination of trekking and culture. The people you meet on the way can show you a lot about the Himalayan way of life - from porters to teahouse owners, they are all very knowledgeable and have amazing stories to tell.

Mental preparation and cardiovascular exercise:

Another important part of the trek is mental preparation. To feel confident, practice for your big adventure. You can also seek advice from other trekkers who have previously done the circuit. The more you are prepared, the better it is. To prepare physically, cardiovascular training is the best option. Focus on intense workouts to rise your body's oxygen levels. Cycling, running, jogging and trekking are just some examples. It is said that cardio fitness can also help preventing altitude sickness. In addition, strength training should not be neglected. To tackle the challenge and avoid injuries, prepare with core and leg strengthening exercises. A strong core will keep you stable and helps increase your stamina at the same time.

FAQs

When is the best time for the Annapurna Circuit?

Autumn (end of September until November) is a great time for the Annapurna Circuit. During these months, the skies are usually clear and amazing views await. Although the trek is possible in winter as well, snow frequently covers Thorong La pass; hence, there is a risk of delays or you might not even be able to cross the pass. If you wish to hike in warmer weather, choose spring (March-April/May) when the rhododendrons are blossoming. Similar to autumn, spring offers fantastic mountain views. The monsoon season in Nepal lasts from June to September. This is the time when the rivers flood and most paths are prone to landslides; hence the Annapurna Circuit Trek should be avoided in summer.

How much does the Annapurna Circuit cost?

The cost for the Annapurna Circuit can vary depending on the level of service requested. With a standard package, you only need to bring cash for additional meals/drinks and services not included in your package price, for example hot shower, wifi or charging devices. Everything on the trail is paid in Nepalese Rupees (NPR). Money changers and ATMs aren’t available on the trek. Therefore, make sure to bring enough to cover your expenses. Also, keep in mind that ATMs in the cities may have withdrawal limits.

Is the Annapurna Circuit a risky trek?

The Annapurna Circuit trek is a tea-house trek. In other words, there are many tea houses and places to stay along the way. Because this trek is very popular, the area is not completely isolated. Technically, it is not very challenging or risky. However, it is very important to acclimatize well. If you are not adequately acclimatized, the risk of developing altitude diseases like AMS is higher. What’s the difference between the Annapurna Circuit Trek and Annapurna Base Camp Trek? The Annapurna base camp trek leads to the Annapurna base camp. It takes around 5-7 days, so it is shorter than the Annapurna Circuit. The ABC trek takes place in the beautiful Annapurna Sanctuary. The trek's highest point is 4200 meters. The Annapurna Circuit, on the other hand, offers more variety in terms of mountain scenery. Thorong La pass, at 5400 meters, is the highest point on this journey that can take between 10 to 21-days.

What travel insurance do I need?

In Nepal, insurance is required for trekking because the mountain areas are quite remote. If an accident or illness happens, you need an insurance that covers the cost of a helicopter rescue in high altitude, as well as hospital treatment. Furthermore, a travel insurance covering for lost, stolen, damaged or delayed baggage, aircraft delays and other disruptions is recommended.

Can I do the Annapurna Circuit in winter?

Theoretically, it is possible to do the Annapurna Circuit in winter and enjoy amazing views of the snow-capped peaks. Winter days often offer bright sunshine with clear blue skies. Along the way, you'll be enchanted by the stunning white peaks. In addition, the trails are quieter than in peak season. However, please note that teahouses are not always open in winter; So it’s best to check with your trekking agent before making plans. Trekking the Annapurna Circuit in winter has one drawback: the temperatures can get extremely cold, sometimes below -10 degrees Celsius. Due to significant snowfall, the trails can become buried in deep snow and you might get stuck. The risk of avalanches exists as well. So please check the weather forecast before setting out on your journey and always listen to local advice. In winter, Thorong la Pass might become an icy slope that is very challenging to cross.

What permits do I need?

For this trek, two permits are required. The Nepal Tourism Board's offices in Kathmandu and Pokhara issue these permits: The Annapurna Conservation Area Project Permit (ACAP) and the Trekker Information Management System Card (TIMS). The Trekker Information Management System Card (TIMS) card is used to ensure trekkers’ safety. These permit cards must be shown at the checkpoints along the trail. They will help identify any trekker who goes missing in the region. If you book a package tour, your permits and paperwork will all be taken care of.
